The effect of sudden wind shear on the Earth’s magnetosphere: Statistics of wind shear events and CCMC simulations of magnetotail disconnections

چکیده
[1] The solar wind is filled with strong current sheets and sudden velocity shears; often the two are co-located. Sudden velocity shears at 1 AU are statistically analyzed using ACE measurements from 1998 to 2008. The occurrence rates of passage and the orientations of the shear planes are examined. For shear layers with vector velocity changes |Dv| > 50 km/s, an average of 12 pass the Earth per day. In the fast wind, 60 sudden shear layers pass the Earth per day (about 2.5 per hour). To explore the effects of sudden wind shears on the Earth’s magnetosphere, global magnetospheric MHD simulations with four different simulation codes are performed at the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) with north-south and east-west wind shears. Windsock movement of the magnetotail is analyzed and comet-like disconnections of the magnetotail and magnetosheath are examined. Sudden changes in the cross-polar-cap potential and ionospheric Joule dissipation are seen as the shear layers pass the Earth. Other potential effects of sudden wind shear on the magnetosphere are discussed.

Investigation of Vertical Wind Shear Characteristics Using 50m Meteorological Tower Data
Wind measurement is important for estimating wind energy potential, but it is relatively cost-intensive and often conducted at a narrow height from the ground level. The typical range of most turbine hub heights is from 30-50 m or even higher. Extrapolation on wind data thus becomes necessary to estimate the wind speed at different heights. Doing so requires the essential understanding of wind ...
متن کاملDensity and temperature of energetic electrons in the Earth’s magnetotail derived from high-latitude GPS observations during the declining phase of the solar cycle
Single relativistic-Maxwellian fits are made to high-latitude GPS-satellite observations of energetic electrons for the period January 2006–November 2010; a constellation of 12 GPS space vehicles provides the observations. The derived fit parameters (for energies ∼0.1–1.0 MeV), in combination with field-line mapping on the nightside of the magnetosphere, provide a survey of the energetic electr...
متن کاملThe Solar Wind Interaction with the Earth’s Magnetosphere: A Tutorial
The size of the terrestrial magnetosphere is determined by the balance between the solar wind dynamic pressure and the pressure exerted by the magnetosphere, principally that of its magnetic field. The shape of the magnetosphere is additionally influenced by the drag of the solar wind, or tangential stress, on the magnetosphere. This drag is predominantly caused by the mechanism known as reconn...
متن کاملSubstorm-associated large-scale magnetic field changes in the magnetotail: a prerequisite for “magnetotail deflation” events
An attempt is made to search for a critical condition in the lobe magnetic field to initiate large-scale magnetic field changes associated with substorm expansions. Using data from ISEE-1 for 1978, sudden decreases in the lobe magnetic field accompanied by magnetic field dipolarizations are identified. In this study, such events are designated as the magnetotail deflation. The magnetic field co...

[1] Atoms in the thin lunar exosphere are liberated from the Moon’s regolith by some combination of sunlight, plasma, and meteorite impact. We have observed exospheric sodium, a useful tracer species, on five nights of full Moon in order to test the effect of shielding the lunar surface from the solar wind plasma by the Earth’s magnetosphere. These observations, conducted under the dark sky con...
